The Legend of Santa
Santa’s image is almost universally recognisable as one of our most enduring and popular legends. Yet the jolly old gentleman with his bag of toys, steering his reindeer and sliding down chimneys is a relatively modern one. This festive documentary shows how today’s Santa is a fusion of cultures and traditions associated with the Christmas season. As Christianity spread, the drama of the very first Christmas was told to each succeeding generation. The generosity of the three wise men was commemorated by traditions of gift giving. Then, 300 years later, legends spread about the gift giving of a catholic bishop, St Nicholas. Nearly every country celebrates Christmas in a different way. In Spain, children write their letters to the Magi, as it is believed that the three wise men travelled through Spain on the way to Bethlehem. In Italy, the witch Befana is celebrated by gifts and fairs on January 6th. While in Russia, ‘Santa’ is played by Babouska. The roots of Santa’s tale are old and widely dispersed, for there exists not one, but many stories.

Who wrote the New Testament - But, whose Truth was...
‘But, whose Truth was the Truth?’ In this programme we look at how these heresies emerged, the literature that was produced and the dangers they posed to the early church. Few have heard of the fifty ‘other’ gospels that circulated in antiquity including the gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and writings by Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate. Then there are countless letters – some of them valid, others dangerously heretical and a few that nearly made it into the accepted canon. If these had made it into the New Testament, Christianity and our understanding of Christ would be fundamentally different.

Who wrote the New Testament - Maintaining the Truth
‘Maintaining the Truth’ is given to the letters of the New Testament, many of which warn the early Christian communities against heretics and their teachings. We examine the letters of Jesus’ brothers, James and Jude, and look at how the Jewish movement in Jerusalem led by James, eventually clashed with Paul’s view of Christ. We look at Paul’s conversion, and how, through his subsequent correspondences with the churches of the Mediterranean Christianity spread out of its homeland and became a growing international movement.
