Art Basel Miami Beach: Spectacular spectacular, Part...
Denise Brown talks to t5m at Art Basel Miami Beach about making a spectacle of her work. "I think the idea of doing something spectacular here is something that probably interests a lot of artists because there is a sense that your work becomes commodified here - it’s kind of a shopping mall experience." According to Brown, it is this commercial sense of the event that urges fellow artists on to do something that little bit different - a feature that will make them stand out from the arty crowd. "It’s empowering for the artist and it creates a different dynamic to actually looking at work in the art fair."

Art Basel Miami Beach: Spectacular spectacular, Part...
Denise Brown elaborates on why artists just love causing a scene at Miami Art Basel. "Producing something that actually can’t be sold probably interests some artists and for others it’s just about having people look at you and being noticed."

The world of Art Basel Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach, held in December, is the most important show on the art world’s winter calendar. Created to complement the summer Art Basel show in Switzerland, the international art glitterati are drawn to the balmy weather of Miami, one of the hippest cities in the world. The event has boosted Miami’s prominence as an international art hub, and there is a thriving community of dealers, collectors, museums and artists that act as the foundation of the event. The exhibition sites are in the historic and trendy Art Deco district, once the preserve of gangsters and drug-runners, now a playground for the hottest names in design, art, music and showbiz. All of the sites are within walking distance of the world famous Miami Beach. The best of contemporary art is on show, with more than two thousand artists exhibiting work from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. Although it draws the household names of modern art, it especially helps to raise the profile of emerging talent, with large spaces devoted to young artists and newly created work. It is the best showcase of contemporary art in North America, bringing together the most talented and influential artists from every corner of the world. More than 220 specially selected dealers exhibit pieces from artists in their galleries, showing a range of works. From video installations and sculptures to major public art projects, Art Basel Miami Beach showcases the variety of art and cutting-edge techniques used around the world today.

Affordable Art in 2008
Continuing with our art coverage this autumn, we went down to Battersea Park to get the low down on the preview evening of the the Affordable Art Fair. Aptly named 'affordable' because you will not find a single piece over £3,000, and even then you'll probably find a lot selling for less, it means you’ll be hard pushed not to find something within your price bracket. For those who are looking for the next Banksy be sure to check out the Recent Graduates' Exhibition to gaze at a diverse spectrum of talent springing up from the UK's art schools. We interviewed gallery owners Rebecca Hossack and Alison Honour, The Fine Art Partnership gallerist Rebecca Eames, and artist-in-residence Charlotte Hardy. We also speculated the future of art as investment with Will Ramsay, the founder of the Affordable Art Fair. Tiffany Fairey of PhotoVoice talks about being the beneficiary charity for the preview night of the fair. We also mingled with the collectors and guests, asking them whether they thought art was a luxury or a necessity.

Matthew Williamson - Fashion Designer
Renowned fashion designer Matthew Williamson discusses the relationship between creative industries. A first-timer to the Frieze art fair, but no stranger to involvement with art; he is working on an exhibition for the Design Museum. “I’m getting more and more interested in the art world – I’m always looking at different artists, galleries, and museums – influence from all different places.” There is a clear link between the fashion world and the artistic world, and Williamson acknowledges this; “The creative industries are becoming closer and closer, like fashion, interior design, and architecture – they’re all part of the same world.” Mr. Williamson plans to attend the Frieze art show, and admits he bought his first piece of art just that week! “It’s by a pair of artists called Rob and Nick Carter – they do a lot of art centred around colour, which I love!” The piece sounds stunning, Williamson describes it as “a light installation – a series of horizontal neon tubes that move and change colour.” He may turn out to be an art lover and collector, but is limited by the space he has in his house! Williamson adds that the important aspect about the piece he bought was that it spoke to him in particular – “It was me!”
