Bonn Hails Eisenhower

The man who once commanded the Allies against the Germans receives a warm welcome from Chancellor Adenauer and the people of Bonn, as he and Mrs. Eisenhower visit Europe as tourists.

They roll out the red carpet for President Kennedy on his arrival in West Germany and he receives a roaring welcome from an estimated 2.000.000 in Cologne and Bonn. He attends Mass in famed Cologne Cathedral and again pledges the United States will remain in Europe "as long as desired or required".

President Eisenhower's historic peace mission carries him to Tunisia, most pro-Western of the Arab nations and smallest stop on his extensive tour. President Bourguiba presents him with an Arab steel and a cheering populace hails the U.S. President. In France, an enthusiastic reception greets him in Toulon but in Paris, the character of Ike's mission is altered as he confers in momentous pre-Summit talks with De Gaule, Adenauer and MacMillan that results in invitations to Khrushchev for Summit meetings in the Big Four capitals, Paris, London, Moscow and Washington.

President Kennedy makes the formal dedication of Chicago's O'Hare Airport, already known as the world's busiest terminal. Later he arrives down town at a Civic luncheon at which he urges public support of his 10.3 billion dollar tax cut.

French minister Brice Hortefeux said Thursday his government's immigration policy was not just about expelling foreigners but included a wider strategy to come to grips with the thorny problem of illegal immigration. He announced 18,600 foreigners had been deported in the 10 first months of 2007 and that 34,000 others had been stopped from entering France at the country's airports, ports and borders. The increased surveillance is part of a larger policy pledged by Nicolas Sarkozy during his campaign for the presidency earlier this year.
