Panaria’s Guys by Nello Correale
“I ragazzi della Panaria” tells the fascinating and adventurous story of 4 Sicilian guys who in 1947, at the end of the war, set up a film production company, that in few years allotted a place in the history of the cinema. For a series of concomitances the Panaria Film finds itself in the core of the biggest cinematographic-sentimental scandal of all times: the war of volcanoes which took place among Holliwood, postwar Rome and Eolie islands. An human, artistic and productive confrontation in which clashed Rossellini, Anna Magnani, Ingrid Bergman and the Panaria’s aristocratic guys, “prompters” of the film Stromboli and producers of Vulcano, a film against the general trend. Francesco Alliata, Prince of Villafranca and Duke of Salaparuta lives in Catania, he’s more than 80 and he’s the only Panaria’s guy still alive. He had as partners the Prince Pietro Moncada, Renzo Avanzo, Quintino of Naples and just for a certain period Fosco Maraini. Through the direct testimony of Francesco Alliata, the pictures, the documents and the films of his archives, our film-documentary aims to make relive the adventurous season of 50 years ago that registered, among many records, (the birth of underwater cinema with the documentary “Cacciatori sottomarini”, first cooproduction with Americans in the film “Vulcano” by Dieterle, first European Technicolor film “La carrozza d’oro” by Renoir, first underwater color film “Sesto Continente” by F. Quilici) also the record to take Holliwood, the industry of the American cinema, to the Sicilian archipelago.
