Reuters: Gilani plans changes 23 March

President Pervez Musharraf has asked the National Assembly to re-convene on Monday to elect the new prime minister with Gilani almost guaranteed to win.

Pakistanis hope that the new Prime Minister will bring democracy and stability to the country.

Benazir Bhutto was prime minister of Pakistan twice and became the first female leader of a Muslim nation in 1988, following the mysterious death of military dictator Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq.

The election is meant to complete a transition to civilian rule. Police also said they had foiled another attack planned for polling day. Campaigning for the elections to a new parliament and provincial assemblies has been overshadowed by security fears, especially since former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack on Dec. 27. Opposition politicians have also complained of vote rigging.

Ending eight years of self exile, Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan with hopes of ending the military regime, and to steer the country towards democracy.

Addressing more than two-thousand party activists, Benazir Bhutto said she would take part in the parliamentary elections despite concerns the outcome would be rigged. The former Prime Minister, who returned to Pakistan in October after eight years in exile, is the first major political leader to launch a campaign since President Musharraf stepped down as leader of the army.
