Africa - River People

To coincide with world water day on Thursday, March 20th, we are refiling a report on pollution in the river Nile (date of 1st broadcast: September, 14th 2007) - The Nile, one of the world's greatest rivers -- and one of its most polluted. Fishermen and their entire families live on their boats, and eke out a precarious existence selling their daily catch. It's an ancient tradition growing more difficult by the day.

The quest to find the source of the Nile built and shattered explorers' dreams for centuries, until it was eventually discovered that the river's birthplace is Lake Victoria. The first part of the great river is called the Victoria Nile, it connects Lake Victoria to Lake Albert through a series of rapids and the powerful Murchison Falls.

The richest diamond deposits on earth are found in southern Africa. Over the course of millions of years, some of these diamonds have been swept away by the Orange River and carried into the sea where they lay waiting like a sunken treasure. But the divers who attempt to harvest these riches have one of the most dangerous professions on earth.

The Lule River is Sweden's largest and most majestic river. Its upper valley was the home of the Sami, the reindeer drivers. Its powerful waters, frozen in winter, protected this community from the outside world. But life has changed now. In the 1980s the river was dammed and mechanised deforestation began. In its own lyrical tones and using the photography of Stig T. Karlsson, the river charts its story. Harshly realistic, but incredibly poetic, this is a breath-taking film.
