The wife of former president Bill Clinton tried to tackle Obama over something he had said in a transcript and ended up trading barbed comments with him. The third presidential candidate accused them of squabbling. However they did agree on their fears for the U.S. economy and possible recession.

The State department is investigating the incidents and has contacted the Justice Department as a precaution in case any laws were broken. Officials said the workers appeared to have acted independently and without any political motive. The incident is an embarrassment to the Bush administration and revived memories of the controversy that erupted in 1992 when State Department officials searched former President Bill Clinton's passport and citizenship files while he was still a Democratic presidential candidate.
