Reuters: Obama wins North Carolina 07 May

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were nervously awaiting the verdict on Tuesday of voters in North Carolina and Indiana, the biggest nominating contests left in their Democratic presidential tussle. An AFPTV report.

Obama, aided by a huge edge among black voters, leads Clinton 43 percent to 25 percent in the rolling tracking poll. John Edwards is a distant third at 15 percent heading into Saturday's contest. The race in South Carolina still shows some fluidity. Jon Decker reports.

By beating Barack Obama in three out of four Democratic primaries-- Clinton stopped Obama's 12 state winning streak and gave a much-needed boost to her campaign. Jon Decker reports.

Obama trounced his Democratic rival, taking 61 percent of the vote to Clinton's 37 percent. Exit polls showed that about 90 percent of African-Americans backed Obama, who is trying to become America's first black president. The victory in Mississippi extended Obama's lead over Hillary Clinton in pledged delegates to the August nominating convention. The next big showdown is in Pennsylvania in six weeks time. With 158 delegates at stake, it's the biggest single-state haul remaining in the race for the nomination.

Clinton's victory gave her new momentum and set up a tough battle with Obama as the race heads on to contest in Nevada and South Carolina

Exchanges between the two Democratic presidential candidates become heated as they debated their views on the country's health care system. Whilst both senators have proposed universal healthcare cover for Americans, Clinton and Obama insist each other's proposals would leave too many people without cover.

Obama was the projected winner in Minnesota, Connecticut, Kansas, North Dakota, Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Georgia, Colorado and Delaware.

Obama also picked up the endorsement of Senator Christopher Dodd, his former rival for the Democratic nomination. Jon Decker reports.
