More than 1,000 people have been killed and 300,000 displaced in Kenya's post-election crisis. The country's western Rift Valley was the scene of some of the worst violence. On one occasion, women and children were burnt alive in a church. Signs are now emerging that some of these attacks may have been premeditated. In and around the town of Eldoret, victims say their attackers were working in groups and a Human Rights Watch report indicates that opposition leaders and local elders played a part in organising them.
