83-year-old Michael Seifert, a former Nazi guard who has lived in Canada since 1951, landed at Rome's Ciampino airport before dawn on Saturday to serve a life sentence for war crimes. An Italian military tribunal convicted Seifert in absentia in 2000 for torturing and murdering at least 17 people while serving as a guard at a prison camp in the northern city of Bolzano between December 1944 and April 1945.

The 78-year-old French-educated guerrilla leader was whisked from a Phnom Penh hospital by police convoy to the tribunal compound to face a panel of investigating judges probing one of the 20th century's darkest chapters. Roughly a quarter of the Cambodian population perished during the Khmer Rouge's four year reign of terror, which began in the mid-1970s and only ended when neighbouring Vietnam invaded to topple the regime.

In Jerusalem, the trial of Adolf Eichmann begins, after his capture in Argentinia following 15 years in hiding. Indicted on 15 counts of crimes against humanity including the annihilation of millions of Jews in Nazi death camps. Eichmann is icily impassive as charges are read citing his responsibility for the Nazi plan for the physical extermination of the Jews, known as the "Final Solution".

Cambodia's Khmer Rouge court held its first public hearing on Tuesday, in what many see as a landmark moment for a country trying to overcome its brutal past.
