In Episode 1, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman visit Adigrat, which is 50 km from the border with Eritrea. The area has been littered with one million landmines, the legacy of a two-year conflict which ended in 2000 but it didn't end for Tesfu who stepped on a landmine when he returned to his village and lost his leg. Ewan and Charley hear Tesfu and Luam's stories as they come to terms with their landmine injuries and plan for the future. Ewan and Charley see how landmine awareness programmes play a key role in schools as a way of preventing further injuries, and they look at the new mobility tricycles which enable those with injuries to become more independent. They visit the border town of Zalambessa where so many mines were laid and are given a rousing reception by villagers. They both conclude that landmines must become a thing of the past.
