The Resident: Is Marriage Dead?

Do we have a social responsibility to at least try to stay married? The divorce rate in the culture of my country, the US, is something stupid. Either fifty percent or more, something stupid like that. Marriage used to be a sacred vow that people took really seriously in our society, and now it seems to have become disposable, refundable, just another oopsie on one’s life path. With that being the case, I can’t help but wonder what’s the whole point then. I mean, I know single people who, when weighing out a proposal, say that if it doesn’t work out, they can always get divorced. If you feel that way going into it, then why bother getting married? I’m not being judgmental, I just don’t see the logic. Why not just keep dating? If you don’t believe the vows you take in a marriage, then why do it? I seriously want to know. Anyone got two cents on this one to share in our little liberal forum here? All I have is one measly penny, and it still believes that marriage means for the rest of your life, barring extremely extenuating circumstances. My penny is old fashioned and from a solid family, though. My penny didn’t grow up knowing divorced people at all. My penny saw married people go through really tough times together and still come out married and in love. But maybe my penny was just lucky. So, do you think we have a social responsibility to save marriage in general?
