Crocodiles have hunted Africa's rivers since the age of the dinosaurs. They are a dynasty built on a design so quick and powerful that it has lasted 60 million years. But even these grand and powerful predators start out small…and young crocs must learn to survive in a harsh – and often dangerous – environment. Wild Chronicles travels to Africa's wilds to track critical moments in an adolescent crocodile’s life as it learns the essential skills of being an alert and patient predator.

Wrestling Champion Lizards
Deep in America’s Sonoran desert we find a world class free-style wrestler, the Gila monster. The mating season is the signal for the competition bouts to begin. Like wrestling, the aim is to pin down the opponent through a series of specialised moves. Without powerful gripping arms, these monsters use their jaws to wrestle opponents into submission. There are no referees, yet gila monsters abstain from any life threatening manoeuvrings.

Vultures
Circling high above the South African plains, nature’s own sanitation crew spots another clean up site. Vultures provide an invaluable service to the farmers below, disposing of dead carcasses and preventing the spread of disease. But Wild Chronicles has discovered that some vultures are dying, and the farmers may be to blame.

Komodo Dragons Harass Deer
On Rinca Island in Indonesia, three dogged komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) relentlessly pursue an injured Timor deer (Cervus timorensis) as a water buffalo drinks its fill and ignores the drama unfolding around it.

Birds forage in a fish trap
In the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana, a variety of birds chase fish in a pond that has been cut off by receding floodwaters. The various bird species each hunt using a different technique. Species include: yellow-billed stork (Mycteria ibis), great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and marabou stork (Leptoptilos crumeniferus).

Seasons of Salmon
Join Wild Chronicles in Alaska, where every year sockeye salmon make a desperate journey upstream to spawn. Instinct propels the salmon to lay their eggs where they themselves were hatched. The odds of failure are immense, but there is no turning back. Even at the end, the salmon’s death provides the gift of life, as the cycle of nature continues.

The croc expert aims to teach Malawai’s game wardens how to safely catch potential killers for study and relocation.

Monitor lies on forest floor
We walked on foot through the breathtaking Shokwe Forest in the Nyamithi Pan. Our focus quickly adjusted to an adult water monitor lizard that lay on the forest floor before us.
