FAME 2010: The Monastery
An exploration of the infamous Grottaglie monastery in Italy that provided the backdrop to the YouTube sensation ‘COMBO’ video by artists ‘Blu & David Ellis’. Over the last few years every single artist who has been invited to the nearby FAME Festival has made the trek to this overgrown monastery on the city fringes to leave their mark on its peeling, crumbling walls. The monastery is one of the most fascinating uncurated public art spaces - if not the most OH&S friendly! Navigating the rambling, labyrinthine structure is both unnerving and moving. The transience of the art (after just a few months much of the work has inspired, ahem, ‘responses’ from local artists) adds to the overall sense of dilapidation. Looking back at our footage, we were fascinated to see that such a diverse group of artists have responded in quite a cohesive, mystical fashion to the space. It seems that we weren’t the only ones inspired by the atmosphere.

Radar Fifteen: Art Battles
Sean Bono set up Art Battles as a way to correct a system he saw flawed. With artist friends getting arrested for graffiti, others loosing their individuality in mundane graphic design jobs, and more laboring unrecognized in galleries, he started painting battles in his canvas-lined apartment as a way out. Since then his unique take on live art has grown leaps and bounds with Art Battles now offering competitors a compelling way to get seen, sell their work & win residences at galleries. We follow Lexi Bella & Leif McIlwaine as they prepare for battle.
