Hype Machine and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Theophilus...
Thoephilus London Already blowing up in the UK, Brooklyn-based rapper and hip-hop artist Theophilus London started out gigging at poetry slams around NYC before dropping “This Charming Mixtape"" as a free download online.  The superb mixtape showcased a love of electronic music and a sharp ear for beats.  Big things are in store (check out his collaboration with Mark Ronson and Sam Sparro on the November episode of Hype Machine Radio!) but right now it’s his energetic live sets and catchy tunes that are making him the talk of the town. We filmed this performance of “Humdrum Town” at the Hype Machine/ Babelgum CMJ showcase so you can see what we’re talking about! babelgum.com/cmj

Hype Machine and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Intro
Hype Machine/ Babelgum CMJ party (for the intro) Every fall, more than 1,200 up-and-coming bands descend upon New York City to play the CMJ Music Marathon.  It’s a chance for music blogs, tastemakers and industry folks from around the world to come see the acts showcase live, then decide on the ones to watch.  The Hype Machine was pleased to have four of the most buzzed-about bands of the week performing together on a single bill at the Hype Machine and Babelgum showcase at Santos Party House during CMJ:  Sleigh Bells, VEGA, Theophilus London, and Midnight Juggernauts (plus, our favorite remixer/DJ of the moment, Alan Wilkis, manning the decks)!  The venue was packed full of major league bloggers, indie rock stars, and serious music fans.  Here’s a great sneak peek at what CMJ is all about. babelgum.com/cmj

Green Owl and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Theophilus...
GREEN OWL SHOWCASE: THEOPHILUS LONDON Theophilus London is from Brooklyn, but his new-wave rap poems have quickly become the hottest shit in both New York and the UK.   A wordsmith that's James-Dean cool, young London is the voice of a post hiphop generation.  His rhymes cut through traditional rap braggadocio to explore new horizons and emotional landscapes.  Below him, the beats are idiosyncratic and filled with synthesizers and talking drums.   London's debut mixtape, This Charming Mixtape, came out 2009 to rave reviews.  Expect a full-length in 2010. babelgum.com/cmj

New Villager live at the IAMSOUND CMJ Showcase
New Villager This unassuming bi-coastal duo ( Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini) are apparently, for their part, exploring the mythology through songwriting, video, performance. Wherever these guys are drawing inspiration from, it’s working. It was one amazing brawny indie pop track after the next. This is “Light House” live at The Bowery Poetry Club for the IAMSOUND CMJ showcase. babelgum.com/cmj

Suckers live at the IAMSOUND CMJ Showcase
Suckers There’s something wonderfully off about this power-pop quartet with its soaring three-part harmonies and manic rhythms .. They were on every list of “CMJ ones to watch out for” from NME in the UK to Paste & Spin over here in the states. This is “You Can Keep Me Running Around”performed live at IAMSOUND CMJ showcase 09. babelgum.com/cmj

Terrible Records and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Class...
Class Actress, a recent Pitchfork "Rising" artist, also featured in New York Magazine's recent Brooklyn's Sonic Boom issue as one of "The 40 Songs That Define the Sound”,  began in Elizabeth Harper's bedroom along with producer/psychoanalyst Mark Richardson and some choice vintage synths. The three piece dabbling in terrific noir-pop melodrama debut on Terrible Records with their EP entitled Journal of Ardency; also features songs produced by Scott Rosenthal and Jorge Elbrecht of Violens/Lansing-Drieden fame.  Song “Someone Real”

Hype Machine and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Vega
VEGA - This 21st century power trio delivers day-glo energy and crazy-infectious dance/pop built upon a foundation of bass, drums and stacked synths.  The Austin-based band features members of another highly buzzed-about act, Neon Indian, but VEGA could very well eclipse their own side-project in 2010 when their vibrant (and hotly-anticipated) full-length album drops.  For a sneak preview, check out this exclusive live performance of fantastic new single (as featured on the November episode of Hype Machine Radio), “No Reasons”. babelgum.com/cmj

Hype Machine and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Sleigh Bells
Sleigh Bells One the most talked-about acts to come out of the 2009 CMJ Music Marathon, Sleigh Bells are a brand-spanking-new duo from Brooklyn, comprising Alexis on the mic and Derek on guitar/beats, who have just burst onto the scene with their unique brand of spare, thrashy hardcore pop tunes.  Their performance at the Hype Machine/ Babelgum showcase was only their sixth live gig ever!  A week later, their self-released new single scooped a 9 (!) from Pitchfork, while their live sets garnered an endless stream of praise from the music blogosphere. Check out this exclusive recording of “AB Machine”. babelgum.com/cmj

Terrible Records and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Intro
Terrible Records: Chris Taylor and Ethan Silverman formed Terrible Records on a whim, and weren't really sure what to do first.  They have made a few bad decisions along the way, and some that were plain awful.  One decision they did make was to form a record label, which was terrible.  I guess the Acrylics record (All of the Fire) turned out pretty alright.  And who didn't like the Arthur Russell/Cant split 7 inch?  There are some high hopes for the Class Actress EP coming out, and that's mildly comforting.  As they continue to make it up as they go, they will hopefully have some strong releases coming out in 2010.  Though I doubt it.   At least Chris is in Grizzly Bear.

Terrible Records and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Little...
Little Girls: If there’s been a ‘trend’ worth following in music this year, it could well be the gravitation towards under-produced, highly-conceptual lo-fi fuzz pop, a Pitchfork-endorsed sound re-popularized by the likes of Wavves, Crystal Stilts, Times New Viking and No Age, to name but a few. In Toronto one entry of note is Little Girls, an unlikely outfit grown from the basement studio stylings of 20-year-old Josh McIntyre, former Pirate/Rock member whose surprise post-punk minimalism created a buzz on both sides of the border before he had a chance to even explain himself. McIntyre, who cites as his biggest influences hip hop producers including the late great J Dilla, recorded and posted some songs under the moniker early this year with zero expectations. Their debut album Concepts, out on Paper Bag Records, is murky, moody and varied – just a few of the reasons they were picked to play the first Terrible Records Showcase for CMJ 09.
