Green Owl and Babelgum CMJ Showcase - Grandchildren
GREEN OWL SHOWCASE: GRANDCHILDREN There’s the unstoppable beats that drive trippy melodies, the surreal choirs of ominous voices and dizzying half familiar moments of rock and electonica augmented by unexpected instrumental stings. It’s ambitious and sonically dexterous and we think its about to take over the world.  Not really, but the zeitgeist that these guys are wielding is special.  In the odd new tradition of Animal Collective and Panda Bear, Grandchildren are the charming new beasts in town.  Look out for a debut album on Green Owl in 2010. babelgum.com/cmj

New Villager live at the IAMSOUND CMJ Showcase
New Villager This unassuming bi-coastal duo ( Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini) are apparently, for their part, exploring the mythology through songwriting, video, performance. Wherever these guys are drawing inspiration from, it’s working. It was one amazing brawny indie pop track after the next. This is “Light House” live at The Bowery Poetry Club for the IAMSOUND CMJ showcase. babelgum.com/cmj

Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Pierced...
Some say the word "mariachi" originates from a Mexican festival in honor of a virgin named Maria H. (mah-ree-ah AH-chay). We at Dig For Fire looked everywhere but didn't find any virgins by that name at SXSW. That didn't stop us from grabbing our Izze margaritas and dancing to Austin's 7 piece Mariachi Relampago at our SXSW Lawn Party. The pinata swung innocently as Pierced Arrows took the stage. Former Dead Moon guitarist and bassist, Toody and Fred Cole, (one of rock's greatest matrimonies) have courageously carried the unrelenting battle cry of hard punk rock into 2010 with their new band Pierced Arrows. We noticed after their set that the pinata was mysteriously mauled...and we heard that Maria H gave it up too. The rumor is someone from Other Music is responsible for the crime...which crime we're not sure...For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/sxsw

Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Thurston...
Front man Thurston Moore is inextricably associated with the Sonic Youth sound. But at the Other Music/ Dig For Fire SXSW Lawn Party this year, Moore surprised us all by sharing perfect, unheard seedlings of songs, performed solo on 12-string acoustic guitar. We snuggled up silently on the grass, blessed by this iconic rock star who had the generosity to bear his soul through these naked, new songs about love and loss. Now that's what SXSW is all about. SXSW is also about setting your band up in 15 minutes, having no sound check, and playing your set better than ever through a venue system you have no control over. Add to that a likely hangover. But bands like Califone make it look easy, creating a wholly unique sound, with contagious melodies and seamless performances, turning the grounds of the French Legation Museum into a veritable soundstage. Band of Horses in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
One of the best things about being backstage at the festivals is all the free BEER and ICE CREAM. This episode turned out to be a little something special.... At Lollapolooza, Band of Horses took the idea of improvising one step further and put those well earned FREE beers to work in the form of a beer-bottle orchestra for a performance of an exclusive new track, “Modelo”. Amazing. More to dig at www.babelgum.com/icecreamman
