New Type York is a glimpse at the lost history of signage and typography in NYC. James Patrick Gibson walks the streets of New York “uncovering the typographic artifacts of New York City”, seeking out all forms of signage that not only convey information but also provide a sense of style. A graphic designer by trade, Gibson’s New Type York has an intimate relationship with fonts, exploring how each pushes a different emotion, revealing the nature of the business whose name it bears while also celebrating what is simply pleasing the eye.

The R.O.M.E.O.S (Katy Chevigny)
The ROMEOS is a short documentary film about long relationships - good conversation amongst old friends. And we're talking old friends. The ROMEOs is an informal club of 5 old time New Yorkers, men aged 72-87, who have met every week for the past 20 years at the Metro Diner in New York City. It is a long lunch to talk about anything and everything; telling old jokes, making fun of each other, complaining about politics. Naturally they have nicknames: Mr. Indignant (his capacity for outrage knows no bounds), Mr. Google (this guy knows everything, you won't believe it), and The Token Goy. They are retired lawyers, writers and left-wing troublemakers and they are utterly hilarious without even trying.

Radar Six - Cut & Paste
Design has not normally been thought of as a performance art, but Cut & Paste are looking to change that. For the last two years John Fiorelli and his team have been traveling the globe, taking the concept of live digital design to more and more communities. Now, in 16 cities across the world, designers compete onstage in a battle for supremacy and the chance to win the global championships. In a series of quickfire rounds they create original works from scratch, and are judged by a jury of esteemed peers from agencies and brands. We follow Ryan Kennedy (Designer, Deep Focus) as he prepares to partake in the NYC tournament, and talk to John about why he constructed a place for designers to create in public.

Design and the Elastic Mind
To document MoMA's wonderful, monumental exhibit spanning design, science and technology, "Design and the Elastic Mind," we enlisted the help of the show's esteemed curator, Paola Antonelli. Paola speaks in detail about several of the exhibits, including "The Afterlife," a system for turning corpses into batteries, robots that act as personal climatizers and DNA origami. She also weighs in on her curatorial approach, addressing the role of the designer, her mission to shift public perception of design and how design revolutionizes our lives. Kiel Mead
A Pratt graduate who cut his teeth in the Brooklyn design scene, jewelry and furniture maker Kiel Mead represents the next generation of New York designers. Taking inspiration from such disparate sources as everyday objects (car keys, chewing gum, retainers) and Catholic iconography (Saint Sebastian, crucifixes), his work mixes irreverence with first-rate craftsmanship. In this video, we visit his Brooklyn studio where he shows us his work and walks us through his thought process. We also head to Brooklyn's renowned design outpost, The Future Perfect, to see his show with German design duo 45 Kilo called "Cleanliness is Next to Godliness."

Radar Thirteen - Undetermined Measurements
Ten people dressed in stark white "clean suits" and masks disperse amongst picnickers, inspecting the ground in sunny Central Park. Heads turn, unsure, and people start asking questions. Undetermined Measurements is an ongoing performance and documentation project. During each phase of the interventionist series volunteers gather, dress in protective clothes and silently engage with the audience in a non-confrontational manner. Why are they there? The question is left open ended, expressing the ever-changing perception that the United States has transformed from a unique symbol of freedom to a more fragile and fearful representation of uncertainty. We follow Sean Hovendick and his team as he takes Undetermined Measurements to NYC for the first time.

Radar Fourteen: Honey, I Shrunk Red Hook
When curator Laura Arena approached MIT’s Luis Blackaller & Andy Cavatorta, her brief was simple: create something that initiates interaction between the inhabitants of the neighborhood. From the Portuguese fisherman to the Projects, to the artists and hipsters, to a new influx of people, Lucky Gallery sits at the crux of several different communities, none of whom talk, but acknowledge each other as familiar strangers. Luis and Andy’s response was to build a miniature version of Red Hook and populate it with photographic doll versions of people they met and talked to on the street. We join Luis and Andy as they prepare for the opening and watch as the element of play in a virtual world impacts communication in the real one.
