Bienvenido a Miami

Here at Babelgum Metropolis we’re getting pretty excited about Primary Flight 2010, Miami’s annual outdoor mural festival and the world’s largest event of its kind. Steamrollering into its fourth year, Primary Flight just gets bigger and bigger – over 250 world-class artists have already taken part, and this year’s impressive line-up includes luminaries such as Burning Candy, Escif, Herakut, Nunca and ROA (who hit the headlines in the UK recently, after a massive public outcry saved his artwork from destruction by an over-zealous local council).

Check out these video highlights from last year’s show, including an interview with curators BooksIIII Bischof and Logan Hicks. The artists will all be on-site painting from November 29 to December 5 2010. Find out more at primaryflight.com.

The Hottest New Music Around…

Babelgum Music dishes up some of the tastiest new musical offerings around, available now to stream and/or download…

Enjoy!

Download for FREE, Those Dancing Days’ brand new track ‘Fuckarias’, the first single to be taken from the Stockholm poppers’ second album, ‘Daydreams & Nightmares’. Their new LP is due for release in the New Year. Download ‘Fuckarias’ now

Wheels are George Runciman (Vocals/Guitar), Felix Howes (Guitar), Yacob Andersen (Bass) and Stirling Mitchell (Drums). The fresh-faced Londoners are on a mission to bring back some Britpop chic to guitar pop. Check them out via their melodious guitar-romp, ‘In My Head’

Cloud Nothings – ‘Understand It All’

We’re head over heels for Cloud Nothings – the brainchild of Cleveland teenager Dylan Baldi who single-handedly penned, performed and produced an album’s worth of feel-good, lo-fi indie gems in his basement. After the tracks hit the blogosphere, Cloud Nothings-mania rocketed and led to the recruitment of TJ Duke on bass, Jayson Gerycz on drums, and Joe Boyer on guitar. The band’s live debut in NYC was with Woods and Real Estate – no less.

PO PO – ‘Let’s Get Away’

Philadelphia brothers PO PO hit the mark with their latest tune ‘Let’s Get Away’. The synths and samples-melding duo have taken ’80s styled riffs and beats and created a ‘come closer’ ballad for the dancefloor, that you HAVE to check out. The band get set to release their debut full length in early 2011. Download ‘Let’s Get Away’ via Stereogum.

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – Rome sampler

Thanks to Some Kind Of Awesome we can offer up a preview of Danger Mouse & composer Daniele Luppi’s forthcoming project, Rome – featuring none other than wholesome indie songbird Norah Jones and Jack-of-all-musical-trades White. It seems that the ever-innovative Danger Mouse can pull off any musical trick and this is no exception – this time he’s using evocative 1960s Italian film samples as the track’s backbone. This is an exciting preview of what’s to come. Rome is due out in March 2011. Listen to it now…

Best Coast pen Christmas tune – listen!

We know there’s still a whole month left until Santa rolls into town but Babelgum Music feel we’re probably all in need of some Christmassy cheer to awaken our frost-deadened senses. The best Christmas album you’ll probably hear this season has to be Target’s compilation of tunes penned and performed by acts including Crystal Antlers, Little Jackie, Blackalicious, Best Coast (see pic above) with Wavves. So c’mon – shake those jingle makers! Or something to that effect. Listen Now…

’99 Problems’ gets made over…

Finally – Liam Howlett of big-beat legends The Prodigy has done a stellar remix of Jay Z’s classic tune ’99 Problems’. Download it here and enjoy!

The Fusion of Art, Fashion and Technology

Last Wednesday, Ralph Lauren blew our minds with this amazing 4D art installation, projected onto the facades of their flagship stores in London and New York. Three-storey models sashaying out of the building, polo players smashing their way through masonry, and the olfactory delights of Ralph Lauren’s Big Pony fragrance drifting through the night air.

So how on earth did they do it? Find out in this behind-the-scenes video.

Babelgum Gets A Makeover

You might have noticed that Babelgum looks a little different. We think you’ll like the changes we made to our appearance, but the improvements run deeper than cosmetics.

Firstly, we’ve added a new Animation channel. There you’ll find amazing works, including the hugely popular Dilbert and New Yorker cartoon series. From simple pencil drawings and paper cutouts to state-of the-art digital rendering, we built a shiny new home for all types of animation.

We’ve also made it easier to explore our vast collection of content, save multiple playlists and share your faves with friends.

Babelgum keeps expanding the boundaries of digital broadcasting with original series and exclusive material you won’t find everywhere else. That’s why we’ve also adopted a new motto: Watch What’s Next.

Three Cheers for the Fixed-Gear Pioneers

Let’s hear it for the bike courier. In these times when fair-weather cyclists breeze merrily along bike lanes around the world, we should remember those front-runners, racing through rain, sleet and snow, alongside lorries and deep in traffic fumes, all for the love of their two-wheeled metal steeds. It is courier culture we have to thank for messenger bags, for the popularity of fixed-gear bikes and, of course, for getting our packages delivered on time.

In this week’s new episode of Freewheelers, we meet London courier ‘Crazy Socks‘, who introduces us to his self-built ‘Surly Streamroller’ and explains why he believes Eeyore is the ‘original Goth’.

And in the final episode in our Vice Versus series, we go deep into London’s Rollapaluza scene, a static indoor bike race held in pubs and clubs. And believe us, this ain’t no Spinning class – this combination of blood, sweat and beers isn’t for the faint-hearted.
