BOFF Winner / SHORT FILM

Officer Down

OFFICER DOWN (USA)

For non-believers, this is a compelling story about a bad cop turned good. For believers, it’s about faith working miracles. Whatever their religious leanings, this film scored so highly with Babelgum audiences that you could hardly see it for all the positive posts popping up on the screen.

Credits:
Director – Richard Recco
Producer – Patrick Curd

Filmmaker Bio:
Richard Recco has been a professional semi-figurative abstract painter since the age of 22. He graduated in screen-writing and directing from the New York Film Academy in 1995. Richard wrote 3,000 Miles To Graceland, a sixty million dollar action film released in 2001 which starred Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Christian Slater and Courtney Cox. He has several projects currently in development, including “Clark Street,” a television series that takes place in Chicago during prohibition. Officer Down is Richard’s directorial debut.

Really? I’m a little disappointed. I thought this contest was for up and comming film makers ..not someone whos already made it. I dont think it was really fair to put this movie with all it’s financial backing up against new up and comming film makers that could only afford to make a movie with a few hundred dollars. As far as the story line goes…been there ..done that and seen it all befor. It would have been nice to see something really creative win. Oh-well, I guess when it comes down to it the movies that cost the most to make seem to catch the most attention weather there diserving it or not.

    Agree with Meredith.
What’s the point of giving an aword to smw who can go to Cannes whenever they want?

  3. 3 Nigel Smith

i agree with the comments above.
by the way, there is something seriously wrong with the sound on the above clip. Dialogue is all panned hard left, and then FX of objects falling is centre panned. WTF?

I agree Meredith, there is little that redeems this short, formulaic film. What a shame that many of the under funded emerging talented people are not being given the opportunity this person has already HAD a result of a commissioned film. Doesn’t this undermine the whole “ethos” of Babelgum?

Not as original and “new” as Pre-Life Post-Life was.
But I can see that Spike Lee probably chose it because this looked and seemed more like a TV movie. But then again, it had much more budget so it should have looked better then Pre-Life and Jellyfish.

I was so impressed with Officer down, reminded me of a cheezy CSI episode , more like officer Clown.
Such an pricey budget for such a short film , what did they spend their money on. It just does’nt make sense to me.
I liked the underdawgs of the short film category , they had more heart going on.

Wow…….Officer down won, I must be seeing trails, kinda like the trails i saw in Officer Down every 15 seconds threw out the movie. I got motion sickness , i want my 25 cents back.

I can turn on my tv and watch something just this on just about every other channel. I don’t need to download BOFF to watch something like this. I am deeply saddened that the up and coming talent who are less fortunate that these guys (budget wise) didn’t get an opportunity to show be rewarded for their talent in something as big as Cannes Festival. A real shame.

This is an official documentation of the budget they used on Officer Down:

I completely agree with Meredith, now-a-days it seems that money can buy you attention.

I agree with the first poster, however I did not think Officer Down was bad at all. I enjoyed watching it and that is more then I can say about most of the other short films. Congrats to the creators!

This was a masterpiece of a short movie. I think the people who posted the negative comments are jealous and probably were invested in one of the competition movies.

  11. 11 Simo

Sorry man, there is no jealousy neither misunderstanding, those people express their feeling how it’s hard for someone who doesn’t have the same materials and the same cast and crew to compete online for an award.

I am happy the best always win. I won a price recently but i made my short film less than $50. It was filmed in my kitchen as well.

I hope people will understand how visual art is a very competitive field. Let work our ass hard and we will see then..

A honest word form an amateur filmmaker.

    Take care mate,
    Charlie Robson

I dont understand ,the movie costs what it costs to make it good. You say this Guy already made it but that was a long time ago. obviously this is a talent that has more to offer. congradulations on you Spike for choosing the best short film hands down. Maybe this will bring some light on this guys work.

  14. 14 Barbara Limar

All those making rude comments about this great short film, Officer Down, are just very jealous people…The purpose of babelgum is give a talented person a shot at this….This Director deserves a shot just like the others who didn’t have the money….or maybe wasn’t as determined as this guy was….

  15. 15 Paul

I thought the film was excellent. It sounds like there’s a lot of “Judges” out there. People making judgements about someone’s financial status, NOT so much, about the quality of the film. This guy has “written” a screenplay …… this award was for Directing …. or maybe I’m misinformed. Keep at it Richard and I hope to be seeing a “Feature” from you soon.

  16. 16 Virginia

Its funny that so many people are under the assumption that the director has more money available to him in order to make this short. I happen to know that you are all misinformed. None of you have any idea how hard he worked on this short.

  17. 17 mmarly

To be honest with the haters of the film the budget for this film wasnt even high… music videos get more money then we spent on making this film… its called good editing and a good score and an awsome dp and a production team that knows there shit…
