Babelgum Gets A Makeover

You might have noticed that Babelgum looks a little different. We think you’ll like the changes we made to our appearance, but the improvements run deeper than cosmetics.

Firstly, we’ve added a new Animation channel. There you’ll find amazing works, including the hugely popular Dilbert and New Yorker cartoon series. From simple pencil drawings and paper cutouts to state-of the-art digital rendering, we built a shiny new home for all types of animation.

We’ve also made it easier to explore our vast collection of content, save multiple playlists and share your faves with friends.

Babelgum keeps expanding the boundaries of digital broadcasting with original series and exclusive material you won’t find everywhere else. That’s why we’ve also adopted a new motto: Watch What’s Next.

All Tomorrow’s Parties, Last Night

We threw a casual but effervescent party last night during the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival to celebrate the 3rd Babelgum Online Film Festival, with a class-A photographer and video crew from Workbook Project on hand to capture the flavor of the scene. No one was wearing a lampshade at the end of the night, but we had fun anyway before repairing to the SVA-2 Theater for a special screening of select BOFF3 films. Claire Reynolds, winner of the Runner-Up Jury Award in documentary for “In Recovery” was there to accept her cash prize, along with seasoned producer Rachel Talbot, accepting a Stoli Emerging Filmmaker Award on behalf of her film “Under the Covers with Chip Kidd.”

Media maven Jason Wishnow, one of the BOFF3 jurors, made the rounds, too, chatting up party attendees and doing the presentation honors. Click here to see photos from the event, which was sponsored by Stolichnaya Vodka. Also on hand to kick back and shoot the breeze on a balmy New York night were friends and colleagues from Shooting People, SnagFilms, FilmBuff, Oktane Media, Protein, and Film Movement.

What did they watch at the BOFF3 screening? Click here and see for yourself.

Sally Potter’s RAGE: A Star-Studded Film Premiere In Your Pocket

This is a 21st-century cinema milestone—the first time a feature film starring award-winning actors like Jude Law (in drag!), Steve Buscemi, Judi Dench, Eddie Izzard, Lily Cole (the list goes on) will premiere on mobile phones. No velvet ropes, no guest lists, just film fans around the world watching the debut of a new work by a renowned filmmaker.

As director Sally Potter points out, “There is, potentially, no hierarchy of who gets to see the film first. A teenager in her bedroom in a village in Spain, a rancher in a small town in Australia, a movie star in a Penthouse in New York, all are in it together, simultaneously; [...] a vast web of parallel experience.”

RAGE is set in the glamorous and chaotic world of a New York fashion house preparing for a runway show. The film has a simple but radical structure. It consists entirely of documentary-style interviews with individual characters—a designer, his models and everyone from a media mogul to a seamstress—shot by an (unseen) student named Michelangelo on his cellphone behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week. Unexpectedly, the budding filmmaker ends up witnessing an accident on the catwalk that spirals into a murder investigation.

This is one movie that’s actually perfect for mobile phones. The one-on-one interviews make for intimate viewing because the actors seem to be talking to you the entire time. Seeing it on a handheld screen only enhances that feeling of intimacy. The film has been custom-edited into seven episodes for Babelgum Mobile, with a new episode being released each day, premiering September 21. One week later on the 28th, after all the episodes have debuted, they will also be available here on the Babelgum website.

If you want to take part in this distribution revolution, download the free Babelgum Mobile app at the iTunes store (or click here if you have Google Android) and watch all the episodes of RAGE beginning today, September 21.

Top 5 Trailers from Hell

by Old Scratch

norwegian black metal satan Fools, listen closely! I bring forth my dark power to conjure these trailers to entice and confuse your mortal brains! Be terrified by the havoc wrought unto this Earth by these films that shall make your blood turn to acid and your bones into… broken bones! Your flesh will char and melt away and you will pray for death if you dare watch these trailers! Your eyes may burst if you look upon them! Let my dark power consume you and allow me to tell you a little bit about some of my favorites!

1. Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors – Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, introduces one of his all-time favorite trailers for the gore fest “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors.” The film is a miasma of terrible tales, each more terrifying than the last! This film stars such foolish mortals as Donald Sutherland and Christopher Lee! They perish, as shall you, if you view this horrific monstrosity!

2. The Terror – Speaking of terror, you shall not be able to avert your burning eyes from the screen when you see this trailer from hell! Joe Dante of Gremlins fame explains some of the reasons he loves this Roger Corman disasterpiece, including the cardboard sets, Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson, and of course, the TERROR ITSELF!

3. House on Haunted Hill – Fool! This trailer is not for the remake starring Owen Wilson, Catherine Zeta Jones and Liam Neeson! It is for the original, which launched Vincent Price’s career!

Goth Girl, Comic Geek, and a SciFi Fan Boy Talk about Their New Favorite Movies

Talyn – Goth Girl, 16 – In Defense of Twilight

goth girlFirst of all, let me just say that I think most movies are stupid and boring and don’t mean anything, but I watched Twilight and saw it as something more than just a mainstream personification of dark culture made up by capitalist deathmongers and Hollywood phonies. Ugh. No, in fact Twilight (the film) grasped everything that Stephanie Meyers wrote in the books. Edward was even more beautiful than I could even imagine. My stupid mother thinks he’s “creepy looking” but who cares? Anyway, if you haven’t seen Twilight, you really should because it shows just what kind of dark love lies within us all.  And if you understood that, then you wouldn’t stare at me in the mall, and maybe you would realize you want to sparkle just as much as I do. Goddess be.

(Not) Anderson Cooper’s Top 5 Your Geek News Episodes

TV's favorite silver fox

TV's favorite silver fox

Hi, it’s me, Anderson Cooper – everyone’s favorite silver fox TV personality. I have an admission to make, ladies and gentlemen: beneath this smooth exterior, I am a hardcore geek. Yes, I’m a total nerd when it comes to watching flicks full of magic, mythical creatures, and the robot-overrun dystopian future.

But it’s hard for me, as a newsman, to get all the info I need on the best geek friendly movies. Thankfully there’s Your Geek News to keep me “in the know.” I’ve picked some of my favorite moments from this show, hosted by the incomparable duo, Matt and Nat. Please enjoy.

  1. T4 Review: Terminator Salvageable? Satisfactory? Sub-Par? – I didn’t see T4 – frankly, I didn’t have to, as Matt and Nat showed me a glimpse into McG’s latest opus. It’s no secret that I’m a hardcore T2 fan, and I have the DVD to remind me of a simpler time, when movies were movies and morphing and liquid metal effects were the apogee of CG. Anywho, Matt and Nat not only examine T4 as a stand-alone film but as part of the series as well. Makes me glad I stopped at #2.
