The Mississippi is a river of sound music wildlife voices weather even the sound of the river itself This is the iconic North American river home to paddlesteamers Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer a key route in the story of slavery and Civil War and of New Orleans where the devastating floods of 2005 laid bare the divisions that still exist in the worlds richest nation Our journey introduces us to the people whose lives still resonate with the sounds of the river sweet and sad old and new We meet musicians farmers and environmentalists who see the daily changing character of the Mississippi and who tell the story of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and its appalling aftermath The Mississippi has many distinctive sounds Its spoken voice has the age old timbre of a culture born over two hundred years ago on the river bank At that time the site where New Orleans would be founded could best be described as wretched swampy terrain excessive heat and humidity According to linguist Craig Caver it is these things both environmental and historical which shaped the voice of the people In the oppressive heat of the Mississippi basin its energy efficient to slur your words Add to that the fact that the river shaped settlement and settlement shaped dialect and there you have the Southern Mississippi drawl The Mississippi has not always flowed freely through history Today the river features 29 locks and dams hundreds of runoff canals and miles and miles of levees which redirect the waters flow away from human settlement Most years the system works remarkably well but during Hurricane Katrina the levees broke with such terrible consequence putting pay to any hubris that man had regarding his ability to tame the river The sounds that fill the air today are as much of diggers and cranes and construction workers struggling to repair damage as of Gospel Choirs and Baptism rights
