Suckers and a shocking finale for our Road Trippin' series

Here We Go Magic, Rodriguez, Brett Denne and Suckers in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
"Sometimes life goes to 11". It's the grand finale in the series and some of the bands we've been talking to all summer came through for us at Austin City Limits (despite the weather). The 70's folk/blues legend Rodriguez, Brett Dennen, Here We Go Magic and Suckers. Big highlight for me, giving out ice cream on stage with Preservation Hall Jazz Band at Austin City Limits. See you next summer! For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/icecreamman

Best of 09 - Daniel Johnston's impromptu festival performance

Daniel Johnston and Blitzen Trapper in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
The summer tour wraps up at our last major festival of the year, Austin City Limits where we got a little sentimental and invited way more musicians to play than we could possibly air (if there’s any bands reading this… sorry, it only happened once). The downside of having so many artists play in or around the truck is that there wasn’t much time left to get out and see the bands that were playing. The upside was that we had a great parking space, a hundred yards or so from the Dell stage which had tons of great bands on it (Bon Iver, Felice Brothers, Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Grizzly Bear, Blitzen Trapper, Dirty Projectors and more) and we could listen to their sets while slinging. Daniel Johnston is the first of two legends who graced us with a rare acoustic performance of "True love will find you in the end”. Blitzen Trapper and The Henry Clay People did not disappoint, but what ever you do – don’t miss the up coming grand finale in the series...Rodriquez, Here We Go Magic, Suckers and a little ICM cathartic soul cleansing :) for more go to www.babelgum.com/icecreamman

Ice Cream tats & Hey Marseilles' storming parking lot performance

Hey Marseilles and Cymbals Eat Guitars in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
We’re in Oregon for Portland’s Music Fest North West and inspired by the recently tattooed Joseph D’Agostino, from Cymbals Eat Guitars – Ice Cream Man & Knife decided it was time for a permanent reminder of this wild ride. It’s our 3rd year at MFNW – a chilled festival with, this year, Modest Mouse headlining. We wrapped up the weekend with an awesome truck side sing a long with Hey Marseilles and their accordions and trumpets.

Best of 09 - Atlas Sound's drunken hotel room live

Atlas Sound and No Age in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
ATP (All Tomorrow's Parties) Part #2, Take 2. Night Crawling around Kutsher’s, up state New York. No Age perform “Brain Burner”. We loved the recent review in the New York Times describing “Mr Randall and Mr Spunt with tendencies towards shambling concision: intentional messiness crossed with brutal efficiency.” Evident in part #2 of the hotel room session. Bradford Cox, lead singer of Deerhunter and solo artist known as Atlas Sound is about to put out his 4th record in two years (including the 2 Deerhunter records). Almost everything on this new album was recorded in one take, a perfect discipline for a performance of “Sheila” in a ATP-Special-hotel-room-Ice-Cream-Man session. ATP (All Tomorrows Parties) is without a doubt, the artist’s and muso’s festival of festivals. Normally curated by a guest performer, ATP’s tribe like community of festival goers follow the annual events from Sydney, Australia to Camber Sands, England and now, for the second year, to Kutsher’s, up-state New York (Curated this year by The Flaming Lips). APT’s natural progression to a label has spurned this weeks guest performer, Sleepy Sun who we just can’t recommend enough. Sleepy Sun sounds like: breathtaking psychedelic and acoustic rock, demonstrating willful nostalgia with male-female dual vocals and an acoustic simplicity that leaves you wanting more. Don’t miss part 1 of No Age “Refrainal”. Check out more videos at babelgum.com/icecreamman

in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man - Spinal Tap tales and some serious tunes

Telekinesis and Lenka in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
Still at Bumbershoot, we catch up with Emily Haines, the lead singer of new-wave funsters Metric, by far one of Canada's hottest exports. Seattle songwriter, Telekinesis (aka Michael Benjamin Lerner) wins us over with golden vocal harmonies and perfect choruses and we get fresh and whimsical, with Aussie export Lenka. Sun’s a-shining and the weather is sweat yeah. Ice Cream Man is "slingin' the cream, living the dream". Song: Telekinesis: "I Saw Lightning"; Lenka "The Show". Best of 09 - Matt and Kim, IN their clothes

Dyme Def & Matt and Kim in Road Trippin' With Ice Cream Man
"Bumbershoot is one of the biggest music and arts festival in the US. Hosted every labor day in Seattle, the line up is usually pretty diverse and the event organizers go the extra mile with the fun-fair themed entertainment. Taking in some of that action with Matt and Kim, we learnt that Matt has got a pretty crazy straight pitchin’ arm and Kim... Well, we’re not judging her on her ability to hit a target. The break through act, from Renton and one of the biggest Hip Hop acts in Northwest, Dyme Def turned up for some sweet treats. The prolific trio break it down for Ice Cream Man with an awesome rendition of “Not That Dude” you are gonna love it. Song: Dyme Def: ""They Like My Flavor""; Dyme Def "" Not That Dude"". "Summer came, and you went a wondering" sing Cincinnati, Ohio originals, Heartless Bastards, in their absolutely beautiful rendition of “So Quiet”. Well, that’s what we have been doing since back in May. Its the end of August now, and we’re in San Francisco for Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. We didn't make it there this year, but were lucky enough to catch Burning Man favorites Albino! Watch them & Reggie Watts keep it light and real and it’s sun drenched a joy to be able to catch acts like Infantree here. We never want summer to end. Song: Infantree: "Where I'm From"; Albino featuring Reggie Watts: "Playaside"; Heartless Bastards " So Quiet". Check out more videos at babelgum.com/icecreamman

The real treat in this episode is going backstage with Brazilian superstars Os Mutantes, you mustn’t miss this stellar performance! Ice Cream Man is: Matt Allen

Ice Cream Man’s Mission is to give away half a million free ice creams. He writes reviews and web blogs about the bands he meets along the way. To date he’s gifted over 200,000 frozen treats while traveling the country; posting up his music missives from backstage at most of the USA's biggest, and best, music festivals.

Road Trippin' Diary

I’m pretty sure everyone loves Austin.  Well, at least lovers of live music.  And… probably foodies as well.  There are a lot of things that make Austin so special but, at it’s core, it’s the people that make it so great.  It’s the residents who support all the live music and the great coffee shops and restaurants around town.  As an example, Austin City Limits festival sold out almost 2 months ahead of time.  That’s pretty much unheard of these days.

One thing you can always count on at ACL is a solid and diverse lineup. The headliners are pretty similar to other festivals, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Kings of Leon, but there’s always a ton of local music on the bill and they also pull in a lot of Southern/New Orleans talent to keep everyone happy.
