James Kalm Frames NY: Joe Bradley & Chris Martin...
James Kalm parks his bike and slogs through a late-winter blizzard to partake in the opening of this double show featuring two of contemporary paintings most exciting practitioners. Joe Bradley employs the trappings of high formalism, Minimalism and an austere vision leavened with a unique whimsy and humor, while we are presented with a chance to view some of the massive paintings that brought Chris Martin's work to the public's attention in the late '80s. The contrasting of these two sensibilities provides us a chance to witness the wide spectrum of today's painting practice.

James Kalm Frames NY: Outsider Art Fair 2010
James Kalm wheels his bike through midtown Manhattan traffic to visit this year’s iteration of the Outsiders Art Fair. Each year this fair brings fresh revelations and renewed acquaintance with some of the world’s hidden masters. Includes an interview with Bonnie Grossman about her discovery of the work of A.G. Rizzoli.

James Kalm Frames NY: Ryan Schneider at PRISKA C....
James Kalm investigates the third one-man exhibition by this young Brooklyn based painter. Although there is a strong contingency of abstraction that still holds sway over large portions of the painting scene in New York, there are talented artists who pursue an expressionistic figuration. Schneider’s oftentimes large canvases carry overt reverences to a New York School sensibility with their physical employment of pigment, drips, and recently poetic notes scribbled over the surface. Homespun imagery mingles with the exotic from the tropics, and continues a legacy extending from the likes of Eric Fischl and David Bates.
