Holmes's Horror Turn

Basil Rathbone was wonderfully urbane as Sherlock Holmes. But in Reginald Le Borg's 1956 horror thriller The Black Sleep, he portrays Sir Joel Cadman, a mad scientist experimenting on the brains of Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine, with the ghoulish Bela Lugosi as his mute servant.

Basil Rathbone Biography

Basil Rathbone (13 June 1892 - 21 July 1967) was a South African-born British actor most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and of suave villains in such swashbuckler films as The Mask of Zorro, Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Court Jester.
