Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Thurston...
Front man Thurston Moore is inextricably associated with the Sonic Youth sound. But at the Other Music/ Dig For Fire SXSW Lawn Party this year, Moore surprised us all by sharing perfect, unheard seedlings of songs, performed solo on 12-string acoustic guitar. We snuggled up silently on the grass, blessed by this iconic rock star who had the generosity to bear his soul through these naked, new songs about love and loss. Now that's what SXSW is all about. SXSW is also about setting your band up in 15 minutes, having no sound check, and playing your set better than ever through a venue system you have no control over. Add to that a likely hangover. But bands like Califone make it look easy, creating a wholly unique sound, with contagious melodies and seamless performances, turning the grounds of the French Legation Museum into a veritable soundstage. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: The...
Young Turks/XL Recordings scored yet again when they plucked The xx and planted them in their "back office" studio, generating "xx", one of the most talked-about records of the last six months. Dig For Fire and Other Music were honored to host The xx's SXSW debut at our Lawn Party this year. The crowd was bar-none the biggest we've had in three years. We promise that we didn't multi track the audience response in this film. That roar is the real deal. Meanwhile, Minnesota has reared yet another musical gem: Anni Rossi writes poetic pop which takes unexpected turns, this tune "Crushing Limbs" in particular feeling accidentally (or not?) 80's dubtronic. Yeah, and it's cool she plays viola, but it's her voice that really has us hooked. For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/sxsw

Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Real...
Most young bands take a couple of years to settle into their sound; Real Estate (who were weaned on Jersey water before expatriating to Brooklyn) sounds like they've been putting out records for decades. They layer sound, melody and rhythm into what sounds easy like a summer song but evokes emotion like a symphony. While we're on weaning we'd like to thank Dylan LeBlanc's bass player for his hanky panky 19 years ago that resulted in that bootful of brilliance, Dylan himself. Yup, that's Dad (aka hit songwriter James LeBlanc) on the bass, the magic they created that sunny day at the Dig For Fire/Other Music SXSW Lawn Party will leave all of us saying "I saw him when..." Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Memory...
If you close your eyes and listen to this Memory Tapes tune "Swimming Field" you will envision a five-piece band backed by a children's choir. Wait, don't close your eyes! Keep 'em peeled on Dig For Fire's SXSW recap! You will be shocked to see only two guys on stage making that huge, dancey, get-your-grin-on sound. Dayve Hawk, a master at synthesized composition, received so many requests to take his show on the road, he grabbed a drummer buddy, strapped on a guitar, plugged his brain directly into the board and his genius rang out across Austin. Meanwhile, somewhere Holly Miranda was jumping for joy on a trampoline, which sent her straight to the chiropractor. But nothing a Magic Hat or five can't fix. Miranda slung that guitar low and mercilessly sliced Other Music/ Dig For Fire Lawn Partiers' hearts to ribbons with "No One Just Us", a psychedelic torch song sung with piercing precision. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Pierced...
Some say the word "mariachi" originates from a Mexican festival in honor of a virgin named Maria H. (mah-ree-ah AH-chay). We at Dig For Fire looked everywhere but didn't find any virgins by that name at SXSW. That didn't stop us from grabbing our Izze margaritas and dancing to Austin's 7 piece Mariachi Relampago at our SXSW Lawn Party. The pinata swung innocently as Pierced Arrows took the stage. Former Dead Moon guitarist and bassist, Toody and Fred Cole, (one of rock's greatest matrimonies) have courageously carried the unrelenting battle cry of hard punk rock into 2010 with their new band Pierced Arrows. We noticed after their set that the pinata was mysteriously mauled...and we heard that Maria H gave it up too. The rumor is someone from Other Music is responsible for the crime...which crime we're not sure...For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/sxsw

Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Pierced...
Hold on to your Magic Hats: Pierced Arrows is the latest project from Fred and Toody Cole, previously of Dead Moon. Rounded out by monster drummer Kelly Halliburton, this Portland band of rock veterans is authentic, raw, punk rock with an unsugared dose of country anger & resentment. Cut from the same shameless cloth of confidence, 20-year-old goth chick Zola Jesus (Nika Roza Danilova), shrouded in black and surrounded by devotees brought symphonic pop opera to the lawn, literally. Trained in opera since grade school, she grabbed the mic, stepped off the stage into the grass, and belted her dark, complex rock arias to the awestruck minions at her feet. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Dam...
Where else at SXSW but at the Dig For Fire/Other Music Lawn Party can you hear every genre and anti-genre of music, played live, in the Texas sunshine, while sipping pints of free Magic Hat beer? Speaking of anti-genre, Dam Funk is undeniably cool. We on the inside happen to know he arrived by high speed pedi-cab 5 minutes before he went on; in signature sunglasses and fitted cap, the beat efx master with a smooth singing voice glided onto the stage and just oozed soul....which dribbled downhill to the Valley Stage where: despite Toro Y Moi’s trepidation about playing solo, the bespectacled baby face had his audience entranced. Toro Y Moi (aka Chaz Bundick) may be young in years but his groovy electronic arrangements, laced with live guitar and in-the-pocket vocals give away his old soul and seasoned taste for the ages. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Mayer...
There is an urban myth going around that once upon a time an Uber Talented Record Producer in LA was working on a project requiring a Motown sounding sample. After trolling all the libraries in the universe, he got fed up and in five minutes freakin' wrote his own. And on the 6th minute Mayer Hawthorne & The County was born. His performance at our Dig For Fire/Other Music SXSW Lawn Party proves one part of the myth to be true: Mayer Hawthorne is one Uber Talented Fella. Speaking of that, how's your Garage Band project coming along? Need some inspiration? Julianna Barwick takes solo technological experimentation to a level of musical sophistication that will derail your senses. Building vocal layers live through a loop station, her semi-spontaneous a capella production is impeccably beautiful. For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/sxsw

Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Zola...
Now we know why they call it an organ; Zola Jesus, backed by haunting ten-finger chords, got everyone's pumping. This petite schoolgirl is a song sorceress, whose take-no-prisoners alto bewilders, bewitches and beckons you to get on your white bull and join her crusade. Though most people only rode as far as the kiddie pool for a quick Izze before settling in for the sweet sounds of Real Estate. You know, it's just plain smart to name your band one of the most searched-for terms on the internet. Especially if your music is good enough to hook fans upon first listen. Real Estate was one of the most talked about bands at SXSW this year and thanks to Other Music's spot-on curation, Dig For Fire was lucky to have these adored suburban Jersey boys play at our 3rd annual Lawn Party. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Woods...
We're pretty sure that the tree with the purple flowers started blooming when Woods, a self-described psychedelic folk jam band, started playing what can only be described as hip and happy music at our SXSW Lawn Party. Did singer/guitarist Jeremy Earl pick up those crazy vintage microphones at Uncommon Objects on Congress on his way to the gig? And what exactly is the technical term for "wearing headphones on your mouth"? Just when feel-good Woods made you forget your last breakup, The Antlers front man Peter Silberman ripped out every heart on the East side of Austin with one of the best vocal performances we at Dig For Fire saw this year. Silberman is perfectly backed up by drummer Michael Lerner and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci, who collectively make such a massive and complex sound you cannot believe you're watching a trio of nice boys from Brooklyn. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Mayer...
Mayer Hawthorne & The County have brought Motown mod to the new millennium. Sporting signature thick-rimmed glasses and a red hot cardigan, with his groovy crew in matching black, Mayer Hawthorne got us all singing in three part harmony. Hawthorne, a seasoned producer whose background ranges from country to rap, writes arrangements akin to the great Smokey Robinson, but delivered with an edgy, contemporary sound. At Dig For Fire we revere musicians who defy genre, and The Decemberists' side project Black Prairie is a new favourite. Imagine the SXSW Lawn Partiers in a campfire circle, lulled by this bittersweet bluegrass, with Eastern European overtones and melodies so lyrical they don't need words, powered only by the setting sun. Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Sharon...
Haunting songstress Sharon Van Etten wrapped her Dig For Fire/Other Music SXSW Lawn Party followers in a blanket of great-sounding Gibson hollow body guitar and angelic vocals. Her indie-folk music is finely crafted, and it’s her precise recipe of range, melody and heart-stoppingly honest lyrics that sets her apart from the numerous other singer-songwriters out there today. We were proud when Brooklyn-based Van Etten passed the baton up the hill to local Austin band Yellowfever, a charismatic team made up of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jennifer Moore and drummer Adam Jones. Their upbeat set of contagious melodies over slick, sarcastic keyboard riffs and sparse drum beats creates a neo-pop sound that no hipsters, North, East, South, West, or South by Southwest, can resist! Dig For Fire & Other Music's SXSW Lawn Party: Talk...
Brooklyn duo Talk Normal played a brain-blowing show on our SXSW Lawn Party Valley Stage. These super human women use immense musical skill to freely and fervently experiment with sound and form. Drummer Andrya Ambro, a compact gal with the battle-ready stance of a gladiator, broke at least three sticks in a half-hour set. Bound by Sarah Register’s stratospheric guitar, the chemistry of this unforgiving pair of post-punk masterminds turns its audience into doting lab rats. And what goes better with a blown mind than a hot and sweaty Cambodian pop dance party? Enter Dengue Fever: tight 'n' grinding world beats iced with the seductive crooning of sexy Cambodian front woman Chhom Nimol. This LA band gives a smoking live show, aptly described by one Dig For Fire fan as “infectious fun”. For more in the series go to www.babelgum.com/sxsw
