French director Bertrand Blier was once better known in America in an era when "foreign films" were routinely imported and shown instead of bought and remade. This kind of edgy subject matter has become likewise endangered, and further illustrates how unique a period the 1970s were culturally.

A late career triumph for sleepy-eyed Robert Mitchum, who excels as a two-time loser trying to avoid more jail time in 1973 Boston. Gritty, realistic and at times shockingly violent, this Peter Yates crime drama needs to be better known.

Second in a series of theatrical pastiches assembled by producer and film fan Robert Youngson that popularized forgotten giants of silent cinema. Moviegoers welcomed these often hilarious glimpses into the past, even though Youngson framed them in such a nostalgic glow that some audiences left in sniffles.

The supporting cast alone (Sam Levene, Whit Bissell, John Hoyt, Jeff Corey, Jay C. Flippen, Sir Lancelot, et al) would make Jules Dassin's prison pic a keeper, but as written by Richard Brooks, it's a tough, incisive and influential genre piece. Features Hume Cronyn's career best performance as the sadistic Warden Munsey, who plays Wagner records loudly to hide the sound of beatings.

By the time James Dean was nominated for Best Actor in Elia Kazan's adaptation of the second half of Steinbeck's novel, he was dead and buried. This was the only one of his starring pictures to be released while he was alive. Reportedly Steinbeck felt the movie was as good or better than the book.

One of the most influential movies of the '60s, Robert Aldrich's celebrated Hollywood Gothic was the first movie to open widely in "Flagship Theaters" instead of playing initial dates in top urban houses, and changed studio release patterns forever more. Didn't hurt the late careers of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford either.

Stanley Donen and Frederic Raphael's sublimely romantic and bittersweet relationship study is an avatar of its era, advancing the use of nonlinear storytelling in commercial filmmaking. One of the key movies of the 1960s. And one of the most satisfying.

Director Larry Cohen gives us as much info as he can squeeze in re: his guerilla monster movie about the flying serpent Quetzalcoatl, especially considering this teaser only runs 30 seconds. Animator David Allen rose to the occasion, as none of the background plates Larry shot were made in the traditional manner.
