CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Lower Dens
New York, October, 2010 : CMJ is much like SXSW - bands line up to play more shows than there are days in the week and there's a persistent hum of band-based chatter from music fans all over the city. On a cloudy Wednesday in Williamsburg, our CMJ Blogumentary kicks off with Lower Dens playing the first of 11 shows in 4 days at Chouette's showcase at Bruar Falls. Lead by Jana Hunter, Lower Dens embody a simplicity of sound that is nothing short of moving. In the four days that followed, it seemed like everyone we spoke to was either talking about a Lower Dens show they’d seen or a Lower Dens show they were hoping to catch. Amanda, who interviews Lower Dens, is a well known college radio promoter and CMJ veteran with 11 consecutive CMJ's under her belt – her showcases are not to be missed and the packed house is testament to the amazing talent she works with. After a big weekend of music, we closed out our 2010 CMJ with Big Troubles at the Capeshok / Infated showcase at Bruar Falls in Williamsburg. Hailing from Ridgewood, New Jersey, they play fuzzy indie pop that's as fun to watch as it is to listen.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - James Vincent McMorrow
Having self-released his debut EP only a few months ago in Ireland, James Vincent McMorrow has already grabbed the attention of labels and bloggers alike, and made it to CMJ for his American debut. The Dublin native opened his first showcase with raw folk tunes. McMorrow’s voice is sultry yet powerful and his lyrics have an honesty indicative of a much more seasoned artist. McMorrow’s Album comes out in the States this winter so grab yourself a copy.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Andrew Cedermark
The final act to perform at Underwater Peoples showcase in Brooklyn, Andrew Cedermark closed out the night, taking the stage well after midnight. Cedermark, former guitarist from Titus Andronicus, performed material from his solo record. It was a raucus mix of lo-fi melodies that put a smile on our faces.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Freddie Gibbs & Grillade
We were lucky enough to catch Freddie Gibbs rehearsing in the studio with Grillade for the rappers first performance with a live band. He was the secret guest for fans in the know at Glasslands Gallery for the Yours Truly CMJ showcase. The collaboration of Freddie's rhymes and Grillade's soulfulness made it an especially sweet ending to the night.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Dead Gaze
Numerous releases this year and increasing love in the blogosphere have landed Cole Furlow, the man behind Dead Gaze, well deserved accolades. Hailing from Mississippi, Dead Gaze make dreamy, melodic noise. Vocal effects, swampy guitars and plenty of fuzz are nothing new, but the excellent songwriting really make Dead Gaze stand out. Running on empty, we just made it to the former Market Hotel space in Bushwick for a private acoustic performance.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Oberhofer
Oberhofer is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the NY music scene. This Tacoma transplant had one of the most infectious energies onstage this CMJ. Brad Oberhofer dreamt early on in life about making it big; Rapper, orchestral conductor, rock star. Watching his performance, it's clear he's got the talent and swaggar to pull it off. For such a young musician, Oberhofer has a confidence and songwriting ability that is wise beyond his years.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Cults & Guards
Cults brand of 60's inspired pop hit the internet last spring and the NY based duo quickly became an overnight sensation. Signed to Forest Family Records, their anticipated full length is coming out soon! Almost as elusive as Cults is Guards, who played their very first show for us at Glasslands. With members of Cults in the mix, Guards plays energetic pop with an Americana twang. While they may be a bit secretive about their music at the moment, we’ll certainly be hearing more from Guards in the near future

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - La Big Vic
When she's not running her blog, Visitation-Rites, Emilie Friedlander is playing out around Brooklyn with her band, La Big Vic. The etherial music is fit for a Wes Anderson soundtrack, mixing violin with synth to create layers of cinematic noise.

CMJ 2010 Blogumentary - Prince Rama
Meditative is one description, but don't call them punks or hippies... Prince Rama grew up together in Florida and by way of Boston and Brooklyn the trio have spent a good amount of time on the road perfecting their distinct sound. Handing out small drums, bells and whistles, Prince Rama include the audience in the cosmic performance. We catch the trio at Cakeshop for one of their early CMJ performances. Although it was still tea time, Prince Rama brought an energetic performance that was mesmerizing. Some like it for the big drums, some like it for the big hair...
